Yamato was the last Yamato-class battleship built by the Japanese Navy. Its standard displacement reaches 64,000 tons, which far exceeds that of battleships of other countries, and it is equipped with nine 46cm cannons, three of which are the largest and strongest in the world. She has gone down in history as the largest battleship ever built. Construction proceeded under strict confidentiality and was completed in December 1941. She served as the flagship of the Combined Fleet for a year from February 1942, with her commander-in-chief, Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto, on board. She also sortied in Operation Midway in June 1942, the Battle of the Mariana Gulf in June 1944, and the Battle of Leyte Gulf in October. In April 1945, she was lost to American naval aircraft while en route to Okinawa. The opportunity for Yamato to demonstrate her capabilities against American and British battleships never came. However, the many innovative shipbuilding techniques cultivated through the construction of Kashisono became the foundation for Japan's recovery as a shipbuilding kingdom after the war.
