The F4U Corsair stands as a renowned carrier-based fighter aircraft utilized by the U.S. Navy during WWII. Its production, spanning from the initial prototype in 1940 to the final variant in 1953, marks the lengthiest run among U.S. piston-engined fighters.
This single-seat, single-engine fighter is distinguished by its inverted "gull wing" and is celebrated for its exceptional performance, speed, durability, and firepower. Notably, it holds the distinction of being the first U.S. fighter to surpass a speed of 640 km/h, making it one of the fastest piston-engined fighters. Beyond aerial combat, the F4U Corsair demonstrated versatility in tactical bombing.
The F4U-1A, an upgraded version of the F4U-1, introduces significant enhancements. These include elevating the pilot’s seat by 18cm, substituting the "birdcage" framed canopy with a semi-bubble canopy, and enhancing overall visibility. Based on the experience with the F4U-1, the F4U-1A also incorporates modifications such as the removal of top cowl flaps and the replacement of the open cockpit window with a metal plate.
The development of the night-fighter variant, initiated on December 7, 1941, coincided with the Japanese surprise attack on Pearl Harbor. The resulting F4U-2, adapted from the F4U-1, featured an AIA radar antenna, strategically placed on the starboard wing. The outermost machine gun on that wing was removed for balance. The AIA radar system, with a range of 6km, enabled the detection of enemy fighters. Additionally, the F4U-2 was equipped with a flame hider, radio altimeter, radar beacon responder, autopilot, improved lighting, and a very high-frequency radio.
This 1/48 scale kit offers the opportunity to build two complete models – the F4U-1A and the F4U-2. The kit boasts meticulous details, including rivets and lines on the skin, and provides options for folded or unfolded wing positions. Builders can also choose separate assembly positions for the rudder control surface, flaps, and ailerons. The kit accurately captures the engine's appearance with intricate details, including various exhaust pipes for different engine models. For added realism, gun bays can be assembled to open, with included guns and belts. The landing gear and wheel bay showcase rich details, and the kit includes additional instrument panel parts for easy customization with aftermarket 3D decals. Transparent canopy parts for both fighters come with cutting-free masking tapes, and finely printed decals cater to four distinct painting schemes, accompanied by exquisite PE (photo-etched) details.
