The Dodge WC-56 and WC-57, part of the more extensive WC series of military light trucks, were instrumental in the Allied efforts during World War II. Manufactured by Dodge, a division of the Chrysler Corporation, these 3/4 ton vehicles were primarily designed as command and reconnaissance cars, with the WC-57 distinguished by its inclusion of a winch.

The production of the WC series started in 1940, with various models fulfilling roles ranging from cargo and weapon carriers to ambulances and mobile command centres. The WC-56 and WC-57 were introduced around 1942 and served predominantly as staff cars for high-ranking officers, providing a reliable means of transport across the varied terrains of the European and North African theatres of war.

These vehicles were robust and versatile, with a 230 cubic-inch flathead inline-six engine providing power and a four-wheel-drive system ensuring off-road capability. Their design included a fold-down windshield, a removable canvas top, and seating for the driver, co-driver, and additional staff. The WC-57, with its winch, was capable of self-recovery and extricating other vehicles stuck in rugged terrain, which was a common occurrence on the front lines.

The WC-56 and WC-57 played a critical role during pivotal events such as D-Day, where command vehicles were essential for maintaining communication and coordination among Allied forces. Their use extended beyond the war, with many of these vehicles being repurposed for civilian use or continuing service in other conflicts, a testament to their durability and design efficiency.
