HMA 2185 'Double Arm' British Style Semaphore Signal with Lamps (Lower Quadrant) | HO Gauge
Functional 'Double Arm' British Style Sempahore Signal (Lower Quadrant Type) with LED Lamps (Red/Green on Top and Yellow/Green on Bottom). Signal can also be installed without lamps or functioning arms if a static model is preferred.

PLEASE NOTE: A small phillips head screwdriver (no 1) will be required to remove this item from its packaging and housing.

FITTING A MOTOR
Two slow action point motors (such as Tortoise or Cobalt) are required, one for each arm. A solenoid type motor will also work but won't look as affective when in motion.

OPERATING LIGHTS
To change the colours, simply reverse the polarity with a point motor accessory switch (such as Peco PL-13 Accessory Switch or Turtoise/Cobalt Slow Action Motors). Alternatively, a two way toggle switch (such as HMA 114) can be used. Two will be required, one for each arm.

FIXING/MOUNTING
Requires a 6mm or 1/4" hole for actuating rod and wires. Signal will sit on board. Clamps and screws provided.
9 - 15 Volts AC power supply and switches required. These are fine scale signals and are not a toy. Handle with care for long life!

Instructions

Functions of the Double Arm Sempahore Signal:
Sempahore signals were a way of providing instructions to the driver before Coloured Signals, and were operated from a Signal Box (which may have been some distance from the Signal). These were generally placed around Stations, Block Sections and Junctions. Some signals, such as these, also contain a small lamp showing the colour of the signal to help drivers see the signal from a distance.

The Double Arm Sempahore uses two arms with the top providing instructions for the current signal and the lower providing instructions for the next signal.

TOP ARM (Home Signal) - The Home Signal is indicated by a Red Arm with a White Stripe. When at Horizontal, this indicates a 'RED' Danger Signal and instructs the driver not to proceed. When raised/lowered at a 45 degree angle, this indicates a 'GREEN' Clear Signal and instructs the driver to proceed in accordance with the Lower Arm.

LOWER ARM (Distant Signal) - The Distant Signal is indicated by a Yellow Arm with a Black Stripe (in some regions, such as NSW, this may be a Red Arm with a White Arrow). On a Double Arm Signal, the Distant Signal instructs the driver what condition the next signal is set at. When at Horizontal, this indicates a 'AMBER' Caution Signal and instructs the driver to proceed slowly and prepare to stop at the next signal. When raised/lowered at a 45 degree angle, this indicates a 'GREEN' Clear Signal and instructs the driver to proceed as normal.
Upper Quadrant Type of Semaphores refers to the signal type 'RAISING' its arm to provide the 'clear' signalling instruction to the driver. Whereas Lower Quadrant Type of Semaphores refers to the signal type 'LOWERING' its arm to provide the 'clear' signalling instruction to the driver.
