The M40 is the final evolution of the self-propelled gun developed by the US military during World War II. An open-top hull developed using various components of the M4 Sherman. It was equipped with a new 155mm cannon nicknamed Long Tom. By making the towed gun self-propelled, the time required to change positions was greatly reduced. Eight crew members operated the gun. However, the firing rate was 1 bullet per minute. The maximum range using high-explosive shells was 23.5 km. In addition, a spade was equipped at the rear of the vehicle to ensure stability when shooting. Equipped with a 460 horsepower air-cooled radial engine mounted in the center of the vehicle body, it demonstrated mobility with a maximum speed of 38km/h. Production began in February 1945 at the end of the war, and it was officially adopted in May of the same year. However, due to the end of the war, production ended at 418 vehicles. After the prototype vehicle was introduced to the European front for practical tests, during the Korean War that broke out in 1950, it was used for indirect fire missions against enemy positions from a distance. It demonstrated tremendous power.
